Heal Your Animal With Advanced Methods

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BENEFITS OF LASER THERAPY

It’s easy to feel helpless when watching an animal experience pain. What if there were a way to speed up the healing process and provide them relief? Paws, Claws and Hooves Veterinary Center can provide such a solution for you. We offer laser therapy treatments, which stimulate your animal’s internal cellular energy process to aid in healing.

We use a device to administer non-thermal photons of light to the body for three to eight minutes. These photons are absorbed by the injured cells, which respond with a higher rate of metabolism. This treatment results in pain relief, increased circulation, reduced inflammation, and an acceleration of the healing process.

You can expect your pet to relax and enjoy the treatment as it is administered. The immediate relief from pain will allow your pet to release their anxieties and feel at ease.

WHAT IS LASER THERAPY FOR?

If you’re concerned that your animal is experiencing a considerable amount of pain due to a procedure or medical condition, laser therapy might be a solution for them. Laser therapy can be used to treat:

Spay & Neuter

What to Know About Spaying & Neutering Your Pets

Spaying or neutering your pets can significantly improve their quality of life. However, because it is a surgical procedure, many pet owners have questions about the process.

Our veterinary practice in West Richland is dedicated to providing a healthy lifestyle for your pets, which is why we’ve compiled this spay & neuter resource so you can make the right choice for your beloved pet.

What Is Spaying & Neutering?

The process of both spaying and neutering is the act of removing reproductive organs from a pet, so no accidental pregnancies occur. There are a few differences between the two procedures.

  • Spaying is the process of removing the ovaries and the uterus of a female animal to prevent pregnancy and prevent future reproductive health problems. This is often a more involved procedure, as it includes the surgical removal of internal organs inside the abdomen.
  • Neutering refers to the process of removing both testicles from a male animal. While still a surgical procedure, it is less invasive than spaying.

The Benefits of Spaying & Neutering Your Pet

In addition to preventing unwanted pregnancies, spaying or neutering an animal can improve your pet’s quality of life in a number of ways. For example, neutering a male animal often results in behavioral improvements that make the animal less aggressive and may result in them not being inclined to roam. Additionally, spaying or neutering your animal can increase their lifespan. Female animals that are spayed will not go into heat if done before their first heat, and cats who are neutered may not participate in urine spraying.

Spaying and neutering your pets also prevents reproductive cancers like uterine and ovarian cancer or testicular cancer. It also removes the risk of pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection for females, and some prostate problems for males.

When Can Your Dog Be Spayed or Neutered?

Our recommended age for small dogs (less than 50 lbs.) to be spayed or neutered is five to six months, and for large dogs (greater than 50 lbs.), between 6-18 months. Cats are also traditionally spayed or neutered around 5 months and should be fixed before six months of age.

Older animals can be spayed and neutered at any time, even if female animals are in heat or pregnant. However, senior animals may suffer complications as a result of the surgery and are considered an increased health risk. Overweight animals and animals with preexisting health conditions are also often considered to have increased risk.

Learn more about our pet dental cleaning for domestic pets, as well as specialized dental services for livestock or show animals.

About Pet Dental Cleaning

Getting your pet to the veterinarian for dental cleanings allows our vets Dr. Jennifer Corwin and Dr. Emily Weier to do a comprehensive oral exam. They can check for visual indicators of cancerous growths, traumatic injuries, open wounds, and infected gums. From here, a dental cleaning allows our vets to remove any tartar, bacteria, and debris that may be found in your pet’s mouth.

This is super beneficial in helping keep the overall level of bacteria down in an animal’s body. This is important when you have pets that suffer an oral injury. If they have a lot of bad bacteria or germs, this can get into the wound leading to serious conditions including sepsis, which is fatal. By maintaining good dental hygiene through regular pet dental cleaning, you are able to reduce such health risks.

What to Expect During Dental Cleanings

The first step will be to put your pet under general anesthesia. This reduces the risk of injury to your pet or to our technicians and vets as we carry out the dental cleaning. After we do a visual exam of your pet’s mouth and gums, we will perform a digital x-ray if needed. This is to review for any underlying damage or concerns with gum and tooth development and alignment. From there we provide recommendations for any additional dental care or oral treatments that might be needed for the health of your pet.

Pet Microchipping

Here at Paws, Claws and Hooves Veterinary Center in West Richland, we are strong advocates of microchipping pets. We want every pet to find their way home when they get lost. Below is some information about pet microchipping and how it works.

What Is Microchipping?

Microchips are small electronic chips enclosed in cylinders made of glass. They are no bigger than the size of a grain of rice. The chips contain a number that can be scanned by an instrument available at animal hospitals or shelters across the country. Your contact information is stored in the microchip and loaded into a national database. In some areas, your pet’s medical information is also on file. This helps greatly in case of an emergency.

How is a Microchip Implanted?

There is absolutely no need for anesthesia when getting your pet microchipped. Your veterinarian, either Dr. Jennifer Corwin, Dr. Emily Weier, or Dr. Walkenhorst, will inject the chip under your pet’s skin with a regular hypodermic needle. Most animals will feel a slight pinch, and there are no side effects when getting microchipped.

How Microchipping Works

When a pet is found, it is taken to a shelter or nearby veterinarian, and scanned for a chip. If a chip is located, the vet or staff will look up the pet’s owner’s information in the national database. Once the information has been found, the animal hospital or shelter staff can then contact the owner.

It has been estimated that only twenty-one percent of unchipped dogs are safely returned to their owners. On the other hand, about fifty-two percent of those with microchips are returned. The numbers for cats are a bit lower because cats are more likely to remain hidden when scared, but thirty-eight percent of microchipped cats are returned home. Only one percent of those without chips are reunited with their families.

Pet Wellness Exams

Just like regular check-ups are important for people, they are also important for your pets. At Paws, Claws and Hooves Veterinary Center, we are your comprehensive veterinarian in West Richland, and we perform pet wellness exams on a wide variety of pets. Many other veterinary practices only offer care for dogs and cats, but we go beyond, caring for the health of sheep, goats, horses, camelids, poultry birds, and exotic animals like guinea pigs and rabbits.

In most cases, pets should have a check-up at least once a year, but some older pets or those with known health conditions should visit their veterinarian a little more often.

What Happens During a Pet Wellness Exam?

During a pet wellness exam, we will review any health issues your pet has had in the past. Our exams also include a nose-to-tail evaluation, where we will look into all body cavities and make sure there are no signs of infection or any abnormalities. We’ll check their skin and coat, check for signs of parasites or any abnormal lumps and evaluate all their vital signs according to their ages and species.

In many cases, a pet wellness exam also requires updated blood, urine, and fecal tests, and it is possible we may ask for samples or obtain them ourselves during your pet’s visit. If they are due for vaccines or other preventative tests or procedures, we will perform those as well.

Your Pets Are In Good Hands

Sometimes, taking your pet to the veterinarian or having us come to you can be difficult. Many pets are not especially fond of the experience, but their health must be evaluated on a regular basis. At Paws, Claws & Hooves, we have two veterinarians on staff that help with pet wellness exams and other types of pet care.

Dr. Jennifer Corwin has been working with animals since childhood as a 4-H member and even continues her involvement with 4-H today. She and her husband have a wide variety of pets and livestock that play a big role in their daily lives.

Dr. Emily Weier also grew up with 4-H and she has lived much of her life in the Richland area. She treats small and exotic animals as well as horses.

Whether you are a die-hard animal enthusiast like our vets or just have a single pet that you are looking to keep happy and healthy, we can provide your pets with the veterinary care they need. To learn more, or to schedule an appointment, contact us at Paws, Claws, & Hooves Veterinary Center in West Richland.

We also offer our clients a drive thru pharmacy!

Emergency & Urgent Care

We have a veterinarian and personnel on duty six days a week who are trained and equipped to handle any urgent care your pet has. Usually, an emergency team consists of at least one veterinarian and several technicians working together to save a pet’s life. Emergencies can be things such as accidental ingestion of rat poison, being hit by a car, and chocolate ingestion. If you ever feel that your pet needs emergency treatment, do not hesitate to come in immediately. We do ask that you call beforehand so that we may prepare for your arrival.

We are also available for drop-off appointments in urgent care situations. If you feel your pet needs to be seen before you are able to get an appointment, our veterinarians will work to “squeeze” you in between scheduled appointments. When you arrive, our receptionists will be able to give you an estimate of how long you may have to wait in order to be seen.
